Tax services
Tax compliance you can see, not hope about
VAT 201 returns, provisional tax and your company income tax return, filed on time and built on the same Xero records your bookkeeping already keeps current.
01 · Three tax services
VAT 201 returns
Your VAT 201 returns completed and submitted on SARS e-filing, so your business stays compliant.
- What you supply
- Full access to your Xero account with daily bank feeds, so cash transactions are captured and reconciled daily. Daily uploads of supplier bills, sales invoices and credit notes, which update profit and loss and the related balance sheet accounts. Any other source documents needed for accounting adjustments, accruals or provisions.
- Turnaround time
- Returns and payment are due by the last business day of the month following the end of your VAT tax period.
- Also useful to have on hand
- Any unusual documentation such as import or export paperwork, which carries its own VAT treatment.
What happens if a VAT 201 return is submitted late?
You could be liable for a 10% late-payment penalty on the outstanding VAT amount, plus interest that accrues on the outstanding balance. If you're late but have no VAT payable, you can still incur a separate penalty for non-compliance.
02 · Three tax services
Provisional tax payments (IRP6)
Your IRP6 returns completed and submitted on e-filing, so registered provisional taxpayers make the correct advance tax payments.

- What you supply
- Full access to your Xero account with daily bank feeds and daily uploads of bills, invoices and credit notes, plus any source documents for adjustments, accruals or provisions. Also your prior year's company income tax return (ITR14) and tax assessment (ITA34C), and a 5-month and 11-month year-to-date trial balance.
- Turnaround time
- The 1st provisional return is due 6 months after the start of your financial year, the 2nd by the last day of the financial year, and an optional 3rd 6 months after year-end.
- Also useful to have on hand
- Any available forecasts, so we can build a reasonable full-year view of financial performance to estimate taxable income.
Why is the 3rd provisional payment optional, and are there penalties if it's needed but skipped?
The 3rd payment only becomes necessary if the 2nd estimate falls short of the full year's actual taxable income — since provisional estimates can over- or under-shoot, it exists to top up that shortfall and reduce interest SARS would otherwise charge. If the 2nd estimate is materially understated, SARS may impose an underestimation penalty; as a rule of thumb, that 2nd estimate should be at least 80% of final taxable income.
03 · Three tax services
Company income tax return (ITR14)
Your ITR14 completed and submitted on e-filing, so your company stays tax compliant.
- What you supply
- Full access to your Xero account, your annual financial statements, any source documents for adjustments or provisions, your prior year's ITR14 and ITA34C assessment, and supporting schedules — wear and tear schedules, prepayment schedules, capital gains and losses schedules, among other documents that may be requested.
- Turnaround time
- Due within 12 months of your company's financial year end.
- Also useful to have on hand
- General ledger/trial balance, fixed asset register, IRP6 returns, proof of provisional tax payments, your SARS statement of account, any other SARS correspondence (audits, objections), dividend and interest schedules, details of large or unusual transactions, and payroll records.
What happens if a company doesn't file its income tax return?
The company can face administrative penalties charged per outstanding month, plus interest on the outstanding debt. It will also fall out of tax compliance, which makes it difficult to obtain a tax clearance certificate and can cause problems in financing and investor due diligence and with government supplier or tender requirements.
